Historic Fernandina Beach

Historic Downtown Fernandina Beach is a 50 block National Historic District located on Amelia Island. Many of the homes and buildings in the District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and reflect the architectural style of the late 19th and early 20th century. Famous buildings include the “Pippi Longstocking” house, constructed in 1881 for Captain James Bell featured as the mythical Villa Villekula in the 1980’s movie The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking, the Classic Revival style Historic Courthouse completed in 1891 and the Renaissance Revival US Post Office constructed in 1912. Residences in the District range from stately Victorians to cute Bungalows each with their own character and charm.

Centre Street, the heart of downtown, is lined with small shops, restaurants and businesses, and ends at the waterfront. Fernandina Beach is the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry and shrimp boats can still be seen tied up at the downtown marina. Each year in May Amelia Island is host to the Isle of 8 Flags Shrimp Festival with over 100,000 people attending the weekend event.
